Since it is virtually impossible to establish a certain uniform classification the way musical instrument are represented here may look a bit chaotic. Indeed distribution of a particular instrument may be almost universal or on contrary a certain musical instrument may exist only among a small ethnic group or an instrument may be common in certain geographic area inhabited by people belonging to different cultural traditions, different confessions and speaking different languages etc. To cope with this problem we simply decided to centre our descriptions around a particular instrument as an object and supplement this with extencive information on function and distribution of each instrument.<br>So far this section is a long way far from being complete or even representative. Dead links on this page mean that we are currently working on this part and it will appear soon. The selection of instruments is defined only by interests of people involved in this project and reflects nothing but this.<p> <center><b>We are at the beginning of a long way. We welcome all specialists to participate in writing this section.</b></center> <hr size="4" align="left" width="50%" color="#808000"> <table border="0" cellpadding="8" cellspacing="0"><tr><td rowspan="2" valign="top"> <a href="kantele/index.html" target="_top"><font size="+1">Kantele</font></a><font size="+1"> and Jouhikko (Jouhi Kantele)</font> are traditional string instruments of Finnic speaking ethnic groups. Kantele belongs to the class of horisontal harps and usually has five to twelwe or more strings.
